Karen Churchill helps her clients achieve their goals by communicating as well as possible with the people who matter to them. This can be done by making sure every word they write is clear and as engaging as possible.

We ask the tough questions

If you have a free half hour during the day what do you do with it?

I walk around the fascinating laneways of Melbourne’s CBD which surround my office. Sometimes, well often if I’m honest, I sample a great coffee along the way.

What’s your number one stress relief tactic?

It’s hard to choose between shopping and exercise - best to combine both if possible.

What’s your favourite film, book and album?

Favourite film: Same Time Next Year (my old favourite) and Hugo (which I saw yesterday).

Favourite book: Whatever I’m reading at the time. I’ve just read and loved too many to be able to choose one.

Favourite album: Abbey Road.

What’s the smartest bit of marketing you’ve ever done?

The overall smartest bit of marketing I’ve done is to keep up and expand my networks – personally.

What or who inspires you the most?

Aung San Suu Kyi because of her grace under pressure, her complete tenacity and her phenomenal ability to communicate with the people of Burma and with the world – even under the most challenging of circumstances.

What’s the best thing about being a soloist? And the worst thing?

The best thing is the flexibility and variety it gives me. The worst thing is having to forgo working in a team.

What would be your advice to aspiring soloists?

Believe in yourself and hold your nerve – in equal portions!

And now comes the plug!

What do you do? Who for? And how does it benefit them?

My name is Karen Churchill and my business is called after me – The Churchill Consultancy.  Not, I hasten to add, out of egotism so much as a piece of advice I took from a trusted colleague when I first stated the business.  He advised me to leverage my reputation as much as possible – and it has worked out well. (Then of course there’s Uncle Winston too...)
What’s your business about?
I help my clients achieve their goals by communicating as well as possible with the people who matter to them.  This can be done by making sure every word they write is clear and as engaging as possible, positioning their messages in places and at times their audiences will see them, finding effective and authentic ways for my clients to conduct their relationships with their stakeholders, audiences or customers.   I usually use a mix of all these along with judicious dollops of general communications expertise, government relations, PR, media relations, networking, and effective internal communications and team capacity building to get the outcome we want.
