Australian Consumer Law

Tuesday 04 January 2011

On 1 January 2011, the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) replaced existing national, state and territory consumer laws. As a small business, it's important that you understand your responsibilities under the new law. It means that all businesses around Australia will operate under a single, national consumer law.

The ACL identifies business obligations and consumer rights across all business sectors, covering:

  • standards of business conduct
  • harmful business practices
  • regulation of specific types of business-to-consumer transactions
  • basic consumer rights for goods and services
  • regulation of consumer product safety.

As part of the changes, the Trade Practices Act 1974 (TPA) has been updated, and is now called the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (CCA).

For more information on how the law will affect your business, visit the Australian Consumer Law website.
