Australian Consumer Law
Tuesday 04 January 2011On 1 January 2011, the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) replaced existing national, state and territory consumer laws. As a small business, it's important that you understand your responsibilities under the new law. It means that all businesses around Australia will operate under a single, national consumer law.
The ACL identifies business obligations and consumer rights across all business sectors, covering:
- standards of business conduct
- harmful business practices
- regulation of specific types of business-to-consumer transactions
- basic consumer rights for goods and services
- regulation of consumer product safety.
As part of the changes, the Trade Practices Act 1974 (TPA) has been updated, and is now called the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (CCA).
